Walker Bay Birders

Walker Bay Birders, welcome to 2010

The sad news, for us, is that our always available guide, Brummer Olivier, has  married and relocated to Stellenbosch.   We shall miss his knowledge and birding skills but would like to congratulate him on his marriage and wish them both well for the future.   We will still make use of his services where possible.

The good news is that we now have to do it ourselves !!!    Without a professional birder leading us, we believe that it will give us the opportunity to identify birds ourselves and therefore improve our skills.   We live in a truly wonderful birding area with an added bonus of amazing landscapes in which to spend our time finding these feathered friends!!   So lets pull together and inspire each other to greater heights.   Armed with bird books and fynbos books, we can make incredible discoveries in 2010.

Elsa Gebhard and Sarah James have offered to organise our Birding Walks for us this year.

We would welcome your input with any suggestions or ideas.   Your contacts of people willing to come to Stanford or Gansbaai to talk about their birding experiences will be much appreciated.

Listed below are Walks we have put together for the first half of the year.   We look forward to seeing you then.     When we are able to find a speaker or an interesting film, we will inform you.

Thursdays seem to be the best day as weekends are usually occupied with visitors or children but please let us know if you do prefer weekends.

Thursday 11 February – Early morning boat trip on the Klein River.   Ernie is willing to take 16 people on his River Rat at a reduced price of R70 per person.    Meet in King Street at the river.    Bring coffee and breakfast.    Please book early.

Wednesday and Thursday 24 & 25 February – Flight for Birders by Anton Odendal.   R350 per person.    Detail has already been circulated but please use opportunity to brush up.

Tuesday 02 March – AGM in Stanford.    Agenda to follow.

Thursday 11 March -  Karweiderskraalpad

Thursday 08 April -  Farm visit in Salmonsdam area.

Thursday 06 May  - Farm visit on banks of Klein River

Thursday 03 June – Stanford Walk.

We are also planning outings to De Hoop, Caledon Veld Garden, find the Rock Jumper and others.

Time and meeting place will be advised before every outing.    We do hope to hear from you and see you.
